Being a member of the New Masters Academy is like having a treasure chest of jewels to explore, with new art classes added all the time. The only downside is that I have to assess my own work and be my own teacher since NMA doesn’t offer feedback to the video lessons’ assignments.
I revised this post by publishing a new version of it so I’ve deleted the content here. Please see the next post for the rest of the content from this post.

Jana, first of all, kudos – wow, you really hung in there and the results are obvious. Thank you for explaining the process – I’ll be reviewing this more, because as you said, you can get it intellectually, but really nice work! I’ll bet you come away learning a ton!

Thanks Joani! I got some good advice from another artist and as a result redid the post to include his suggestion of using monochrome versions of the photos to check my work.

Hey, this looks like a great challenge. I may have to try it. I may do the exact same progress you did with two painting from each reference, that’s the best way to learn. It would also be nice to see a comparative of the reference photo in grayscale.

Thanks Chris!!! You inspired me to redo my blog post and include the monochrome conversions of the reference photos. What a perfect way to check my work and see if it is close to the right values!
