We always enjoy a visit to Saul’s Deli in Berkeley for sketching and dinner. I got my usual grilled trout dinner but was too hungry to draw it before eating. One of the owners of Sauls, Karen Adelman does the wonderful quirky drawings on their menus and website and always makes us feel welcome to come and sketch there.
More Saul’s sketches from my pals Micaela, Sonia and Cathy on our Urban Sketchers site.

I took one look at the dish with the pickle and jumped up to go get one, mouth watering.
Excellent work. I always feel as though I am right there in Berkeley with you on these sketch-outs.
Have a great week!

I agree with Melinda, you always take us right long with you and I love these trips. I went to the deli website and I love Karen’s illustration, but I think it would be great if she illustrated each part of the menu with a different picture. I wanted to see more of her work so I was disappointed to see just one.

There are more of Karen’s illustrations on the website, one per website page, but her most fun work appears on the actual menus they hand out at the restaurant and on the other displays listing daily specials or special events. We invited her to sketch with us one night she was there but of course she was the hostess that night and couldn’t. Jana

Okay, now I’ve found my way through the website. Thanks so much. Those pictures are so much fun. I would love to see a menu, too.

Love that sketch of pickles – even if I don’t actually like eating them myself! x
