Yesterday, despite feeling otherwise perfectly fine, my nose turned into a broken faucet that wouldn’t stop running. I was trying to paint and it was becoming impossible to work for more than a few seconds without sneezing, wiping, or blowing my nose.
Necessity is the mother of invention: the only solution was to stop the flow. So I made little nose “tampons” by tearing a sheet of Kleenex into about thirds and then folded and rolled it into a size that would fit my nostrils and I was set. I could paint for at least 10 minutes before it was time to replace the nose-pons.
Today it’s turned into a real cold with the full range of symptoms which is sad because it’s a rare sunny day and I’d planned to paint outdoors. Instead I’ll be indoors bundled up, drinking tea and chicken soup.

You are TOO MUCH… I do feel sympathy for you– I DO, Jana– but you are just too funny, and I am laughing away. Great sketch and I hope the faucet has turned off and you are feeling better.

Hi Jana, I’m sorry to hear you’re under the weather. Best to get it out if the way before the new year starts though so hope that chicken soup, hot tea and bed rest work soon. Enjoying your sketches as always. By the way, I hope you don’t mind but I copied your idea of end-of-journal self portraits. Great practice and record keeping of changes over time! Thanks & take care, Ambal.

Oddly enough, my brother discovered this 40 years ago!

I’m laughing too, but hope you get to feeling better soon! I don’t think I’ve ever had such a runny nose that I needed a nose tampon!! LOL

I thought this my patented technique! I have been doing this since I was a small child, but I guess I had to worry about a runny nose more often since I had a lot of allergies.

I can’t believe it, I did the same thing just yesterday! My nose has been streaming for a couple of weeks and I’m fed up with it now! My skin has dried out so I had to do this to put a face pack on! I hope that chicken soup works your cold clears up quickly!

It works pretty well, don’t you think? But what an awful cold. Sheesh! Two weeks of it would drive me nuts. Mine has finally stopped running and now I’m just waiting each of the other annoying stages to pass and getting my energy back. I hope you’re feeling better soon! Jana

Me too. I find myself being jealous though, that your nose was actually running. I’m so stopped up I have to breathe through my mouth, and forget sleep! Such a pretty sketch though, even with the nose-pons, and it looks sooo like you.

I hope you’re feeling better by now. Mine also turned into cement head and it took antibiotics to finally (mostly) clear it two weeks later! jana

I laughed out loud when I found this post. I am reading through your blog in an attempt to catch up, so I’m late with my comment. But this is hilarious! Necessity IS the mother of invention. So glad you’re better, and I do admire your goal of spending less time on the computer and more time living. Something we should all do (I tell myself as I sit here staring at the screen and typing)…

You made me laugh as I’ve been sitting at the computer all evening (doing some volunteer work but still…!!!!) And now it’s 11 and I finally finished and reading your note was a lovely way to complete my evening so thanks for writing! Jana
