Ten Minute Trees on Memorial Day

I got inspired to get back to sketchbooking after looking at Pete Scully’s watercolor sketches (scroll down on his site to see entries from May 9-13) from his recent trip to Santa Monica, where I was born. They reminded me how sketches of even the most ordinary sights of daily life can make exciting sketches when seen through fresh eyes (and with some talent and skill like Pete’s). I decided to just go around my neighborhood, doing 10 minute sketches of trees, trying to capture their various personalities and gestures.

The one above is viewed past the flag on my next door neighbor’s house looking across the street to a little house and its very big tree.

10 Minute Tree-Bay Laurel

Above is my little Bay Laurel tree in front of my house. I thought it would be nice to have bay leaves at my disposal but it’s a weird tree that stays green all year but grows sort of clumpy and doesn’t really seem that tree-like. My drawing doesn’t either–I think I made the trunk to wide for the leafy part. I guess I should have added a little background to give a sense of size but my 10 minutes was up. (I gave myself up to 10 minutes to sketch and 10 minutes to paint and used the timer on my watch.)

Above is my other next door neighbor’s tree–some sort of non-fruiting plum tree that really is this color and while it was planted a year after my Bay Laurel it’s twice as big.

I didn’t get any further than my own front yard but thoroughly enjoyed myself, listening to the birds chirping and neighbor’s music playing through their windows on this first sunny day in a week.

Love these … They really represent a handful of trees and their differences. I like the way you’ve handled the watercolor … I like this type of work.. very appealing.

I love the idea of setting a timer just for practice and doing 10 minute sketches. For me to do these, we are talking more lid half hour sketches LOL, but I guess that is part of the point, get quick and keep the details simple…

Nice trees. Flag against the green of the tree is nice. Purple plum trees are beautiful. (I want to try painting those also) Laurel tree has nice color and pen strokes which make a nice spot drawing.

thanks for the nod! these are awesome, i love trees, especially the purple one, and the ten-minute thing is a good thing to do, i’ve found my out-and-about pics are taking longer than nec and i need to cut down the time i’m hunched over a paintpot in a dusty busy street

I love the shadow on the non fruiting plum tree. It’s beautiful. Why are you timing yourself?
Why don’t you spend the entire day painting the tree…. or the month… a little bit at a time. Maybe spend ten minutes a day painting the same tree for a month….?
I think we should all spend more time painting..
I know I know there’s work to be done. But life is short. Wouldn’t it be fantastic to spend time painting? I’m talking to myself now. I think I may paint my orange tree this summer, and spend a half hour a day on the same painting. What do you think? Am I crazy from my long “makingaliving” work hours?

Thanks everyone. Dee, I was doing ten minute sketches because I had a whole bunch of art stuff I wanted to do and was having trouble deciding which to do. So instead of picking one thing I decided to spend a little time doing the trees so I’d feel happy at being outdoors painting from life before I returned to the studio to work indoors on a nice day. It was either that or continue staring into space trying to decide what would be the best thing to do until there was no time left! Also I tend to overwork stuff so setting a time limit helped me to not do that.
