Ink & watercolor in large Moleskine watercolor notebook

When I was traveling across country many years ago, taking an old highway instead of a huge interstate, I stopped for breakfast in an old-fashioned roadside diner with wood panelled walls and big, dark padded booths. I was handed a typed menu covered in a thick plastic sleeve with red leatherette edging. There was a typo on the menu that said, “Fresh cantalpupe.” I’ve never been able to look at cantaloupe since then without remembering that wonderfully odd typo and saying silently to myself, “cantalpupe.” Try it…it’s so fun to say…but then so is cantaloupe with it’s extra, silent “u”. Shouldn’t it be pronounced cantaloope with that u in there?
And it tastes good too. Now I’m going to go eat my still life and go to bed!

I don’t care how you spell it; that’s the most rich, luscious can’lope I’ve ever seen.

I just went and had a peek at your website and am so inspired. I particularly love the fruit and still life. I’ve just started moving into watercolors and really love the effect of the ink first and then the watercolor on top. I think I’m going to try that next. Thanks for the inspiration!

Thanks for such nice comments. Mudspice, I pronounce cantalpupe as
cantahlpewyoop, not cantal-poop…sort of like…well, I don’t know if there are any other words in English that have that P.U. sound other than maybe that color puce.

This is such a great painting. I love the vibrant colors.
I think I may have to go to the store and get one. Its’ great if you put a scoop of vanilla ice cream in the middle.

What absolutely beautiful colours!
I say ‘canteloop’ now I’m wondering how it’s supposed to be pronounced! Normally I’m addicted to chocolate but at the moment (quite a few months in fact) I’ve been addicted to melon, I NEED it every day!

Isn’t it just the best when you eat what you paint? What a wonderful array of color and although cantalope isn’t my favorite I could eat yours!

Wow, this is fantastically luscious! Did you use some Opera Pink in that? It zings!

Katherine, I used to say “flutterby” too. I think I got that from my kids.
Martha, no Opera, it was Quinacridone Magenta on top of Cobalt Violet Light.
Laura, that’s hilarious!
