I had a hard time getting started in the studio today. I’ve been studying and reading many books on technique: oil, acrylic, monoprint, drawing…and I’m at the point of too much information and not enough practice. It’s like learning how to drive by reading books, without actually doing any driving — you might know lots of techniques and rules, but are terrified at the idea of getting behind the wheel and driving off. I started feeling paralyzed, unable to decide which medium I wanted to explore, what subject I wanted to paint, and after looking at all the fine work in the museum Friday and my books and on others blogs, was beginning to get that awful, “why bother, it’s all been done before and much better than I could ever do” sort of feeling. I also had a headache and had some annoying errands to do.
I did some organizing in the studio and then gave up and went out to do the errands and then it was dinnertime and still no painting. After dinner I finally got to my drawing table and just started sketching this scruffy, battered winter rose from my bush that still hasn’t been pruned. Then I scanned it, printed out the drawing a little bigger, and using Saral transfer paper (like carbon paper but waxless), transfered the drawing to a piece of matboard and then painted it with acrylics. I know I would have done a better job with watercolor, but it was fun experimenting and learning how to “drive” the acrylics by taking them on a little jog around the block.

LOVELY LOVELY LOVELY! And I SO KNOW that ‘why bother’ feeling — well, dear friend — I’ll tell you why! Because ONLY YOU can make JANA art — no matter how it might compare to others — NO ONE BUT JANA can do, see, interpret, paint, imagine, sketch just like you …. and sans you, the world would be a lesser place .. truly — no matter the comparison to others… the world needs YOUR contribution, your ideas, your art, YOUR HEART … especially those of us who love you … now — get out those paints and do it!
HUGGGSSS!!

This painting is really lovely. Love the way you have done the bottle and the zigzagging stem behind the glass. I know that feeling of discouragement from too much study and seeing so many inspiring images (I always feel like the more I learn the less I know!)

Jana, you made me laugh out loud! I’ve been looking at Sargent and my current painting on the easel is def looking pathetic by comparison. But its MINE!!! And I’m trying to just learn to live with my own stuff. I love your rose and your work.
Keep making Jana art!!!

Don’t you love being an artist and having all that art anxiety? I get that daily as well. But unfortunately I don’t know what else to do…..
This rose is very romantic looking. The colors are great. It’s very 1940’s-ish. Love the darkness of the zigzag. Good thing you finally got to your studio!

I love both of these Jana. I understand that why bother feeling and I get it so often but somehow it passes. It’s a problem for me with blogs, seeing so much talent out there and even people who just DO so much as if there are 48 hours in their day. Come to think if it, even those that never question themselves make me feel inferior! I saw one quilters work and I know that little moment seeing her bright and beautiful quilts was the turning point for me with quilting, I’ve more or less given up, but art goes much deeper and eventually I stop looking outwards and concentrate on whats inside ME. So, this too will pass, as the saying goes!

I could not agree with you more about all the reading and studying vs. doing. I tend to do that which is why I have not been very involved with postings lately.
