Ink in HandBook Co. square sketchbook
Drawn laying down, looking out the window since that was all I had energy for today.
Usually this “fall-back day” is my favorite day of the year because we get an extra hour. I like to wait until an hour in the day that I’m enjoying and want another of and THEN set my clock back. That way I really get to enjoy and experience that extra hour. But I was feeling so wiped out today that I’ve decided to wait until tomorrow to grab the extra hour. I’m working from home a half-day tomorrow, so I can wait until I’m done working and then get a whole new hour back.I was feeling so funky and in a slump today that I decided to call in sick to my internal boss and play hooky. It was nice not pushing myself to accomplish anything other than a walk (to the store for milk and donuts which cancelled out the walk) . I’m recovering from a busy week and a super-busy and headachey day yesterday.
I taught my watercolor class in the morning followed by a birthday party for Cody who is turning 26 tomorrow. The party was on my ex’s new yacht (it’s truly a yacht, not just a sailboat — it’s quite big and beautiful with seating for 10 inside and outside, two bedrooms and two bathrooms and even a freezer to hold the ice cream cake that I brought). It’s berthed in Sausalito at the very end of the dock, so that sitting on it you have a view of the bay, the seals and sea birds sunning themselves on the dock and the hills of Tiburon across the water. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect, just enough wind for the sails and high 70s temperatures. The 10 of us (including my wonderful sons, niece, sister ex-husband, and most of their significant others) sailed out past Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge and the Bay Bridge towards San Francisco and then enjoying the sunset, we feasted on sushi, salad, ribs, potato salad and birthday cake.
The only downside was my headache (not made better by the boat’s great sound system, with satelite radio pumping 80s rock through multiple speakers inside and outside the boat). By the time I returned home I was so exhausted that the idea of posting to the blog was absolutely impossible, which is rare. Normally I can eke out something, but I didn’t even want to see a computer, just a nice plump pillow.

Hi Jana;
I hope your headache is better today; they can be really nasty, though. You have my sympathy and total understanding.
The Birthday Party sounds like a dream party, on a Yacht!!Wow!!! Of course, it doesn’t matter a bit where you are if a nasty headache gets in the way of being able to enjoy it.
I particularly like this drawing, precisely because it is simple. Black and white drawings are one of my favourites, and this one is really nice.
Get better soon!

Ahh, Jana, I am sorry yesterday was so tough! Hopefully that hour will come in perfect some time soon. I accidently set my clocks FORWARD an hour last night, realized it this morning when I got up, so ended up with 2 extra hours this morning! It was great!
I like this pen and ink sketch of yours, even if it is a “tired View”.
Hope ya feel better!!!

Tami, Now that’s a trick I haven’t tried before but I love it! Getting two extra hours sounds heavenly! It seems funny to say that yesterday was tough…poor me having to go sailing on a perfect day in beautiful boat with my dearest loved ones. If only all the world’s problems were so tough, eh?

At the moment I am ‘off’ colour and into black and white. so I like this. Hope the headache is better, I dont get them any more which is great. Dont know what I did because I used to get rally awful ones.Sounds like a wonderful sail tho, I could imagine it all. We have just put our clocks foreward, no or is it back? old age getting to me, dont like the extra cold and dark in the morning and we eat at what was 5,30 because he who must be obeyed likes to eat at 6.30. I just feel tired because I have been doing more.

I love the various textures in this one, and the composition. Your sailing day sounds lovely though I could have done without the music too – I hate to be shut up in a car with other people’s choice of music – and headaches are horrid.

I was about to say ‘what do you mean not just a sailboat? Isn’t a wind powered boat always more enjoyable than a motor powered one? ‘ but re-reading your post I see you were on a sailing yacht. Lucky you sailing in such warm weather. My hubby and kids all impose their music on me, so that I never get to listen to anything I like because when I have the choice I opt for blessed silence – so I sympathise. Lovely illustration – how do you like the sketchbook?

TERRIFIC sketch, Jana … tired and all … I applaud your sketching despite the headache and busy day. What a magnificent time, though … beloved family, water, sea, temperatures, drat headaches afterall ….
Hope you’re MUCH better today!

For someone with a headache and after-party tiredness, you did a wonderfully detailed, crosshatched mundane view to make it a wonderful view! You sure have a wonderful reserve energy somewhere.

Now that’s what I call dedication – sketching while lying down. How did you get perspection right from that position? I like the way you’ve made drawing a life practice, which is what I believe it should be, never edged out by too little time or energy.
