Farmers Market, El Cerrito Plaza

I packed my little painting kit in my backpack and walked the mile up to El Cerrito Plaza after lunch to sketch at the Saturday farmers market. It was a rare sunny, warm day in this usually foggy, windy neighborhood. Unfortunately when I arrived I learned they would be closing in only 20 minutes. That was just long enough to stand and do most of the drawing, but not to paint. Time was cut even shorter by the various people who came over to see what I was doing and wanted to chat a bit. At 1:00 I took a few photos and headed back home with a pound of Peets Coffee Special Decaf beans.

I wish I could have painted at the Plaza because I knew exactly how I wanted to do it–very quick and fresh, with a light touch. But instead, sitting at my drawing table painting from the photos, I overworked it, eventually making one grand mistake (painting the background red since everything in the fruit stand had a red glow to it from the red shade structure–that is everything except the background which was NOT UNDER the structure–and clearly obvious in the photo!)

The red background looked awful, which gave me the chance to try out my bottle of Aquacover, which is like liquid paper but designed to work with and match different brands of watercolor paper. Supposedly you can use it to reclaim white areas in a watercolor painting without it being noticeable AND you can paint back over them. I used it to hide the red background and then, before it was quite dry, painted some green on top of it, which sort of blended in a bit instead of sitting on top. I think if I’d waited until it was dry, and had used it a little more thickly (I diluted it) it might just have worked better. I can tell that it would definitely work well for small areas without any problem. The Arches Bright White Aquacover matches the Moleskine watercolor notebook well.

I actually try to block out people watching me draw, but sometimes it gets on my nerves and I start to write things in my sketchbook like “stop looking over my shoulder” etc. It’s worse when I am sketching in galleries, when i find people spend longer looking at my embarassed scribble than at the boccioni. Still I’m getting better at coping with drawing outdoors. I often go to the crowded farmer’s market in davis but am nervous enough getting out my sketchbook, let alone the paints i always optimistically bring.
This is really nice, and very colourful. Market scenes like this remind me of France.

That’s a LOT of linear detail to have to capture in a mere 20 minutes (with interuptions, too, wow)! I love the color and would never have guessed you went through all that with the background had you not mentioned it. Really beautiful.

I love farmers markets, but they are usually so crowded it is hard to find room to paint or draw here. I love the look of the flowers in this painting. Interesting about the block out stuff, I dont think we can get it here but will look for it.

I left a comment on your Flickr Jana, but have to tell you again how much I adore this painting!! The vibrancy, colors, lines — just the BEST of what I love of your work!! GLORIOUS!!!!!

BTW, I too have aquacover (the one that blends with Fabriano wc paper) — and find that even after drying overnight, a bit of water just remelts it again — SIGH … I find it works best if I use a thin thin layer of the stuff and DON”T overwash it with any wettish paint … works better for me with dryish paints …

Jana, Not sure exactly what you had in your mind, but this came out gorgeous! I love the bright colors! I can see where a red background might have been a bit much, though. This time of year coastal weather can be great, maybe another sunny day will happen by.

There’s still a bit of a warm glow to the background which is nice. I had no idea such a product existed!

This one, plus the ones of the tomato basket and tomato vine, are particular favourites of mine. It’s something to do with the patterning of natural forms. You do that really well — the freshness comes right out.
