Drawing Friends

Judith by Me 2

Judith by me, Ink and watercolor (Micron Pigma .08) in 9×12 Aquabee sketchbook.

Painting group tonight in my studio but only three of us could make it. Susie wanted to work on a still life so Judith and I decided to draw each other. We took turns posing for a 5 minute sketch (below) and then drew each other’s faces as we were drawing each other (above).

I find that drawing someone’s face is like caressing them, getting to know them on a deeper, more intimate level. My mother always told me it’s not polite to stare, but drawing gives you a chance to stare and really see, and among friends, it is a real gift!

Faces intrigue me. I have gotten into trouble myself for stareing, sometimes people just don’t understand that the reason isn’t always a bad thing! I think you did a beautiful job on her.

What FUN, Jana!!! And good work too!! Must have been in the air last night — I tried my grandson’s face again — BIG SIGH — caressing, yes, achieving a likeness — NO … these are such a challenge — but yours look great!

I really like your sketch of Judith, a wonderful aliveness to it and her expression, I hope she was pleased I know I would be! And yes I understand the uncomfortableness of “staring” when doing portraiture, even moreso when they’re staring right back at you! so especially bravo under those circumstances!

I love all these sketches and drawings, so much spark! I agree, drawing faces IS like caressing them. I feel like I know my subjects intimately after doing a portrait, it’s an amazing experience.
