It’s best to use protection if you’re going to get close….
(I’m noticing from the comments that some people don’t get what the protection is…Is it my drawing that makes it hard to tell it’s a condom? Should I redraw to make it more obvious? Did you get it? )
I drew the snake on the left in ink in my sketchbook, painted it with watercolor, scanned it, and then in Photoshop, added a new layer and painted in the “protection.” I placed the two images side by side in a new Photoshop file.

Although the bear sketch is very cozy (reminds me of the Sniffing Bear and Boo-Boo Bear stories my dad used to tell me), I love the snakes! Humourous twist on the topic…like your use of color

Ok, this is going to tell you a lot about the type of person I am but the safe snake is absolutely hysterical. And I IMMEDIATELY got it (another clue in regard to my twisted sense of humor) – no reason to redraw it. I think you merely lulled people into a nice warm and fuzzy kinda place and then you went and threw a condom at them. They just weren’t ready for it :-). Thanks for explaining how you did it as well. Great blog – LOVE your work!

PS – I HAD to show your post to my husband – he loves snakes. He asked if it was an example of “snake sex”. Shows you why my humor is so twisted – too many years of living together!!

No need to redraw it at all – cracked me up! As always you have a great sense of humour (or maybe I just have an equally sick sense of humour).
Somehow this reminds me of an Australian bird called the bower bird. The male bird makes a beautiful nest for the female, which he decorates with blue items for her… We have a common brand of condom which comes in a bright blue packet, and apparently male bower birds love the colour of that packet and love to decorate their nest with them – kind of ironic that they are using it to boost their fertility, and humans have the opposite idea!

Hi again!
Your drawing is brilliant! Yes, it’s good to protect the “snake”! Funny! I’m glad, that the “human snake” has no teeth – ouch!

I didn’t get it immediately, just really liked the concept of a safe and risky snake, the safe one with a plastic bag over its head until I looked closer and got it.
Super fun and a great add for getting close and staying safe!
I rather like all of your work and your comments. Would love to connect. I’m in Richmond Annex, very close to El Cerrito.
I teach and do watercolor too (among other things- mostly teaching full time at The Art Institute of California-SF on Market Street, drawing and anatomy, etc. and a few privates in my garage studio/living room). Your watercolor classes look like fun. One can never learn too much, and might be fun!
Are you going to the Sausalito drawing thing Sept 23rd? I’m considering. If so, perhaps sharing a commute?
respectfully,
Ruth
