I had a terrible, scary day that included a near poisoning of my dog and other misfortunes, that left me a nervous wreck. Finally, in the evening, I spent some time in my studio sketching this cheery guy from the Museum/Sktchy app that completely changed my pissy mood and I went to bed happy. Here’s what happened:
A big slob of a PGE utility guy came to check my gas meter. When my dog barked, he threw big chunks of a leftover cookie that was in his pocket (who keeps loose cookies in their pockets?) to her over the fence.
He tried to tell me it was dog treats but I quickly saw it was pieces of an oatmeal raisin chocolate chip cookie. I knew chocolate was bad for dogs but I learned that 7-8 raisins or grapes are enough to cause death from kidney failure.
I couldn’t tell how much she ate before I found the mess of chunks and crumbs and cleaned it up. The internet said it was a veterinary emergency and to immediately call the ASPCA Pet Poison Control Center. I paid $95 to spend an hour on the phone with them.
While the toxicologist and vet were consulted and I was on hold, I made an urgent care appointment to have her stomach “pumped.” Finally the Poison control doctors decided that if she ate less than 7 raisins we could watch and wait for 48 hours so I cancelled the urgent care vet appointment.
Then I made the call to PGE to report his awful behavior, AND that he put a bag of his trash including a “Brief Relief urinal bag” and wet wipes and more gross stuff in my garbage can and left trash on the ground. PGE promised to pay the $95 and any other associated costs. And to do something about that guy.
Update: good news, it’s now past 48 hours and she’s OK!

Thanks. Doesn’t he look like someone you’d want to know?

Your sketch and related dog story make me think you or the guy in that sketch is the Fresh Pet dog food guy who sends away the cute redhead in schoolgirl attire when she questions his refrigerator.
I am not sure how a single sketch could fix everything you just described. I’d be sick and livid. At least, you seem to have worked it all out okay. But, that gas guy was no gas…unless he was toxic gas. For the decision of what to do with your dog to come down to the number of raisins she consumed?…I’d say don’t chance it. Get whatever check you need to assure her safety, rather than wait 48 hours to see if it was 7 or 8 raisins. I don’t want her to die just for you to drop on your knees, shouting at the heavens, “IT WAS EIGHT RAISINS!!!”
I need more than a loose sketch to get over that. I need a hug, a cry (maybe) and some comfort food. Got any Fresh Pet? Just kidding. 🙂

That’s funny! And your advice is exactly the kind i would offer too. The reason we decided not to take her in was based on the large amount of cookie I picked up, Costco’s ingredients listing of raisin content, and my dogs other health issues (epilepsy, heart disease) and the fact that we’d spent the afternoon at the veterinarian the day before. I was confident she hadn’t eaten 7 or more raisins. Plus she’s a very picky eater. I’m happy to report she’s doing fine!

So, the dog has other health concerns. That’s even more distressing. I’d probably toss my cookies looking at the cookie or other mess on the floor. 😛 I don’t know how you can gauge content of every cookie even if looking up some standard on a company’s website. But, luckily, she’s okay…that picky eater who could have consumed a dangerous cookie. So, fortunate for you. Watch out for those pesky people who don’t understand proper dog food.
