Hi this is Cathy again. My medium is actually gouache. I was really impressed on how you took another not so typical paint pallet for shading you portraits. I have been trying g to figure out how to do this with a blue or purple pallet. Are there any books on this subject . Sorry if I am being bothersome. I am 73yrs old and am trying to get back to painting. Something I did in my youth. My vocation was in nursing. But I have always loved art. Thanks for your time. Have a great evening

I’m happy to help. And I’m older than you! But I’ve always done some kind of art or craft my whole life.

I’m interested in hearing more about what you’re trying to do. Are you talking about using a limited palette of 2 or 3 colors in gouache to paint something to look realistic but with “wrong” colors. Like a portrait using blues and purples instead of “flesh” colors?

If that’s what you mean, it’s really fun to do. The trick is to focus on values—maybe choose one color to represent darks, another for lights and a blend of them for mid tones.

Or try a typical limited palette of red, yellow, blue but use different versions. Like a purple for everything blue, a green for the yellows and orange for the reds and then make that work, again focusing on values.

There are lots of different fun ways to play with color and palettes. Let me know if i understood what you’re asking about.

I forgot to say there are probably hundreds of books on color. Do you do better with books or videos? There’s an excellent, fun gouache portrait class on video doing just this that i can point you to. Books can be trickier to recommend. Most are probably overkill. I can probably find a couple in my collection that might be helpful.

Yes, you understand exactly what I’m talking about plus you are describing techniques to try like replacing only 3 colors to replace the actual color you are seeing. I thought I was suppose to change reference picture to shades of black gray an white but the way you explained what I was talking about sounds really interesting to try. I have, like you, always done some kind of creative art. I have worked with leather scraps, made anatomically correct dolls with hand painted eyes, designed clothes for a while, and i took classes from a fabric and textile designer for 21/2 years. I did staging with thrift store finds for3 years. And did murals in my house in S.F. I have also a great love for gardening. 9 yrs ago I decided I needed a change, so I sold my house and moved to Pinole.I love it here with the trees and nature and seasonal changes. I have been working on my garden most of that time. I am ready to return to painting, just dont know where to start. I haven’t been practicing so I need to remember how to paint again.
