Here are some random sketches from hikes and walks with my dog, sitting in meetings, a movie shown in a library and at the dog park. These are all in my pocket Moleskine that I carry with me all the time. Hover over images to read captions or click on them to see them larger.

Hi Jana,
I love your wildflower sketch. Would you mind explaining your process? Ink first, then colored pencil, then gauche? Or Gauche then colored pencil for detail. I would appreciate info on your technique if that is possible.

Thanks Dory. I originally sketched this onsite with pencil (that’s why it has notes about colors). Then when I got home I added colored pencil but wasn’t happy with the results so I painted over it with gouache. Then I put ink on top of the gouache since I lost the outlines. I don’t recommend this process as a way to work–it was just me trying to fix things I didn’t like. After that day I started carrying a small set of colored pencils with me so that I could work directly in color without needing water, brushes, etc. as I do with my standard go to for color sketching, watercolor. I guess it’s better than not being able to get out walking. I see all kinds of crazy contraptions for dogs at our local huge bayside dog park: from strollers to slings to baby Bjorn type front packs. One day my dog injured her leg on the rocks by the water at the dog park and was limping and bleeding (only a few days and $200 later and she was fine) and I started carrying her and then realized she had 3 other legs she could use. Put her down and she made it just fine to the car. Which reminds me: time to go to the dog park so I have a calm tired pup for an afternoon in the studio.
By the way, I absolutely love your latest watercolors. I keep saving the emails from WP to reply and leave a comment but not getting around to it. Jana
