Living Alone Means Never Losing Your Socks

Socks

Ink & watercolor (larger)

I was folding my laundry and admiring my collection of wonderful SmartWool socks when it struck me: I haven’t lost a single sock since I began living alone. When I was married with kids, socks disappeared on a regular basis and I had a drawerful of one-of-a-kind socks.

My son still comes over to do his laundry but even so, only one sock temporarily migrated but he brought it back (a year later at the insistence of his girlfriend), along with a pair of my undies that had somehow ended up in his laundry.

There’s pros and cons to living alone, of course. One downside is that if you do lose something, you have nobody to blame for it. Even now, when something goes missing, my first thought is that one of my sons must have taken it. But my only available scapegoats are my cats.

Fiona the calico does like to steal my SmartWool socks (maybe they smell a bit like animals, being made of wool?). I try to keep them away from her, since she tosses them around and wrestles with them and when I find them under the bed they are shredded and holey.

At least she doesn’t eat them. My friend Marean has a beautiful Sheltie who eats her socks whole, and has had to have stomach surgery to have a “sock-ectomy.”

Yes, I do wonder how often I must blame the innocent! There is definitely something about wool and cats. My cat (when I had one) used to do that funny kneading action whenever she was about to settle on anything woollen – like the jumper I was wearing, ouch!

And I can no longer blame my daughters when my mascara or one of my sweaters goes AWOL! I mean, I CAN, but it stretches credulity. I am quite sure that I’d manage to lose socks if I lived alone, though. Our dog Mollie used to eat a big hole in the center of every one of our cloth napkins, but she avoided socks.
Wonderful little sketch.

Oh, single socks! I have just tossed out a drawerful and there’s another one building up. We used to have a weimeraner dog that ate socks and deposited neat little sock ‘packages’ all over the lawn, but now – it must be the sock imp – can’t possibly be our messy habits! Your socks make a fun drawing…

I’ve always thought that the washing machine hid my socks, that one day a repair man would find a complete family of mismatch socks clustered around the motor drinking wine and celebrating laundry day. In an attempt to eliminate a drawer full of single socks, I mostly wear white tennis socks. They disappear too, but what’s left is a single sock that will fit in with the rest of the socks in drawer.

These look so woolly! No wonder your cat loves them. I think I could lose socks under any circumstances. I have a basket full of ‘orphans’, and, ever optimistic, I keep thinking the other ones will turn up.

Love the sketch. My brother discovered the
secret of lost socks. He runs a mail route,
and one day found a road-killed sock that
explained it all- they run away looking for a
better match.

I feel for them– I know the feeling–but
I live alone, these days, and I still have
mis-matched socks.

Jana – I knew it! I think if I lived near to you I wouldn’t be able to work any more because I would be too busy to laugh about your adorable “silly” sketches – I love being silly.
You just have a hand for keeping anything worthwhile… ๐Ÿ˜†

If some designer in Paris or Milan would just start sending models down the runway wearing mismatched socks, then suddenly everyone would know what to do with them. (Hopefully someone would inform me, since I pay no attention to runway models or designers.) It seems such a sad waste of perfectly good socks. ๐Ÿ™‚

Love your story and your painting. I too live alone…haven’t lost any soxs but do loose my glasses on a regular basis. I still blame others…I figure they must come in at night when I’m asleep and move things around just to aggravate me!!

Love this piece…I am still in the midst of lots of socks, missing socks, mismatched socks, holes in socks…I bribe my sons with 10 cents a pair if they fold the basket of socks…the other day, desperate with 2 baskets full of socks (how can we have so many socks???) and I paid 25 cents a pair…I owe him 20 dollars! I had to make him stop…

perhaps there is an advantage to your situation:)
