This week’s Illustration Friday cue is “Invention.”

I visited the nearby Point Isabelle dog park to sketch today and noticed that everybody had these ball-flinging and picking-up devices. This wonderful invention allows people to exercise their dogs without having to get any exercise themselves. They don’t have to run or walk with their dogs, bend down to pick up the ball, or use any energy throwing it. All they have to do is drive to the dog park, get out and fling the ball while the dog runs around.

Aside from not getting exercise, it’s actually a pretty cool invention, especially for people whose dogs slobber all over the ball, or for people like me who throw the ball so that it hits the ground a few feet away.

I’ll post my ink and watercolor paintings from the park tomorrow.

I have one of those things…embarassingly enough! You’re right, it is really lazy. I don’t get to play with it much though, when I try to take it outside instead of the frisbee my dog acts kind of disappointed, so frisbee it is. Great illustration – love how the guy and the dog both seem bored!

what an amazing contraption! I suppose it would be good for slobber balls, but it’s funny what we come up with to make our life as lazy as can be!
*I didn’t consider wordpress when starting my new blog, but perhaps I’ll look at it…

I see those tennis ball slings everywhere too! I think they are especially helpful for those dogs that slobber. I like the way you drew this… very nice!

Hey, we have one of these and don’t think of it at all as a way for us to avoid exercise! It’s a way to make sure our insanely energetic golden retriever gets ENOUGH exercise! I love lobbing the ball in a long, deep, graceful arc and watching Abby scamper far up the hill to get it. Mostly, she forgets the retriever part and we have to run after her to get the ball and repeat the action! A wonderful invention and lots of fun for people and pup alike ;D.

Love this one… I saw it on the IF site. My first thought of the gadget was “how silly”… but then I remembered the soggy, slobbery ball and I can see how it’d be nice to have.

Great work… Love the cigarette – perfect epidome of lazy pet owner.
